Problem with drivers in Windows 7

If you have Windows 7 you may get an error when you're trying to use your Cricut with Design Studio.

This should fix your problem:

  • Close Design Studio
  • Connect your Cricut to your computer but leave the Cricut switched off.
  • On your computer select Start --> Control Panel --> Devices & Printers
You should see something like this:

  • Now power on your Cricut
  • A new device should appear under the Unspecified heading. It should be called USB <--> Serial

  • Right click the new device and select Troubleshoot

  • The troubleshooter will start and it will look for problems with your device.

  • Follow the instructions the troubleshooter gives you.

  • After you have finished try using your Cricut in DS again.

Hiya. Any ideas on how I would tell if there was a problem on the troubleshoot. No suggesions were made for how to resolve the issue. does that mean there isn't one?

I'd imagine so.

What problems are you having?

I'm unable to update the firmware- I've followed all the avice I'e found so far - resetting my expression, uninstalling an reinstalling the CDS software, But everytime I try to update it says the firmware update has been unsuccessful and I should try again from point 1.
I've noticed that after starting the upgrade, the E makes it normal whirry noice and then for a plit second I get a (Not Responding) message in the top right hand corner of the screen. Wondering whether there is somethin to do with ommunication between the 2 devices which is not quite right.

Have you tried using a different USB cable? Have your turned your firewall and virus software off when you're doing the update? Are you connecting your cricut directly to the USB port and not a USB hub? Have you tried all the different USB ports on your computer?

louisa said...

Hiya - I have tried all ports and am not using a hub, I was going to try a new USB cable next - just need to trag myself to a computer shop. I had also turned firewall and and virus software too. Will let you know how I get on

Quick update - I quit. Tried new usb lead, all ports, all tips & tricks. The firmware uodate starts but it would appear that Cricut Design Studio stops responding a few seconds in. Thanks for all your help. I'm going to wait and see what happens when the Cricut Craft Room is released.

@Anonymous - Does your computer recognise your Expression when you connect it to your computer?

What software are you trying to use? CCR or Design Studio? (I'm no help with any 3rd party software.)

I am so glad I came across your blog! I just got a new computer and was not having any luck using Design Studio with Windows 7. Your instructions were perfect!

What happens if Troubleshooter won't launch? When I click on "Devices and Printers", there is a triangle with an exclamation point in it next to the Cricut. It tells me I need to troubleshoot the device. However, when I try to do that a window pops up and asks me if I want to allow a program called "msdt.exe" to update the program. When I say yes I get a message saying "A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting". Consequently nothing works. It is getting very frustrating.

Hi Donna

From the Microsoft search I did on "msdt.exe" it looks like you may have malware on your computer that is blocking that program from working.

The best thing I can recommend is to have your computer checked for malware/spyware etc by a professional. There are many malware removal programs around you could use yourself but some of them aren't safe.

FYI....My wife's cricut express had not been updated for a long time as her desk top MAC has an old OS version. We had to hook it up to a PC and load the Design Studio but my PC would not recognize the cricut and ran the Trouble Shoot with no help. I found out that my PC was missing ftd2xx.dll files. I did a google search and down load the DLL's (www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/D2XX.htm‎) and bam it found the cricut. Now it is doing the update. Next will be going back to the MAC and doing update on the Craft Room. Thanks for the help.

Mine used to work and now it doesn't. When I tried trouble shooting it couldn't find any problems. Not sure who to update. Tried both USB ports on my computer. so frustrating.
