Installing the OLD version of DS

Now that SCAL has been updated, the following steps are not necessary. I'll leave the tutorial here however as a "just in case" for the future.

To use SCAL you will need the old version of Design Studio on your computer. Here's how to download and install the old version, while also keeping the new version on your computer as well.

If you have the original Design Studio disk insert it and go straight to step 7 below.

If you don't have the original Design Studio disk you can download the old version from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?nalmwm4wids

This will take you to the Media Fire website.

1. Click on the "Click here to start download" button

You should see the following box:

2. At the next dialog box select Save File the OK (or Save if your using Internet Explorer)

3. Select a destination for the zip file. Anywhere will do, so long as you can remember where you saved it.

Once you have downloaded the software you can start the installation.

4. Go to the folder where you downloaded the zip file.

5. Double click on the Cricut_DesignStudio_Installer zip file to unzip it.

Once the file is unzipped you should see this box.

6. Double click on the Cricut_DesignStudio_Installer file

This will take you to the Setup Wizard.

7. Click Next

8. Click "I agree" at the next box

This is where you need to change the name of the destination folder.

9. Left click after the word Studio and type OLD

It should look like this:

10. Click Install

The software will install into the new directory you named above.

11. Click Finish

You now have two versions of Design Studio on your computer. It's a good idea to rename the desktop icon of the old version so you know which is which.

12. Go to your desktop. Find the icon for the version you just installed.

13. Using your mouse right click on the icon.

14. Select Properties

15. Click on the Shortcut tab and make sure the Target Location field refers to the OLD version you just installed. It should say "Cricut DesignStudioOLD" (or whatever you called it in step 9 above). If it's not, press Cancel and find the other Design Studio icon and repeat this step.

16. Press OK

17. Right click the icon again. This time select Rename.

18. Change the name of the icon to reflect that's it's the old version. You can just add OLD to the end of the icon name as below or you could put SCAL somewhere in the name.

19. You may need to confirm that you want to rename the icon. If so, press Continue.

20. Now when you want to use SCAL, you open the OLD version of Design Studio. You should see this version number as it is loading.

21. When it has loaded, select Help, Update cricut firmware. The firmware on your Cricut will be backdated to the old version. You can then open SCAL and cut your SCAL designs.

22. If you want to cut designs with your Cricut cartridges you will need to open the NEW version of Design Studio and again update the firmware. You should see the latest DS version number when it is opening.

Continue doing steps 20 - 22 depending on whether you want to use SCAL or DS. Just remember SCAL uses the OLD version of DS.

Thank you so very much. I knew I had to do this but wasn't quite sure how so I was very nervous. You made it so clear! I will always cut with my lower version on my Cricut, but it's nice to be able to have an updated view of the new cartridges just for designing purposes!

Thanks for creating such a helpful site! Please keep posting! I have become a basic user of SCAL and Inkscape, but haven't really done anything with DS yet (Even though I have owned it for over 6 months!) You're very good at posting detailed steps- keep it up! Thank you!
